Regional Advancement Officer, West Coast

The Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF), a results-driven, entrepreneurial-philanthropic organization, is not your average non-profit. Founded in 1991 by real estate guru and successful businessman, Harold Grinspoon, HGF employs over 100 staff and offers innovative national and international philanthropic programs. HGF’s programs share the common goal of making Jewish life and the Jewish community more vibrant and more connected.



The flagship program of HGF, PJ Library, began in 2005 as a book program, sending books about Jewish holidays, culture, and values that parents could read with their children at home at bedtime. Today, it is a more than $36M global cultural literacy venture that partners with philanthropists and Jewish communities around the world to provide families raising Jewish children with the gift of free, high-quality children's books, music and other resources that foster deeper engagement with Jewish life. At the same time, its unique funding model has helped hundreds of communities raise money by leveraging HGF philanthropic support. The model, in which HGF underwrites a large part of the program costs, is sustainable and repeatable, and has helped PJ Library grow and expand globally to 21 countries.
 

The Position

HGF seeks a new Regional Advancement Officer (RAO) to promote and expand PJ Library in the West Coast region. Reporting to the Director of Advancement and based in any major West Coast city, the RAO will manage the partnership between HGF and a portfolio of 20-25 local PJ Library partners. A hybrid fundraising and partnership position, the RAO will be a knowledgeable proponent of foundation goals and program objectives, as well as a fundraising professional with expertise in major gifts and stewardship.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represent HGF and articulate the vision for PJ Library’s mission to a variety of audiences, including volunteers, donors, community leaders and partners
  • Work with partners and HGF staff to identify and steward new six- and seven-figure prospective donors from outside the organization’s existing pool of PJ Library donors
  • Establish and maintain strong, positive working relationships with a wide range of partners and stakeholders including leaders of Jewish communal organizations
  • Assume responsibility for the growth and continued financial stability of PJ Library in assigned partner communities
  • Identify and implement donor cultivation strategies including stewardship events, board and donor presentations, targeted communications and foundation relations. Identify and cultivate new possible event hosts. Supported by the back-office development team, ensure timely and accurate completion of routine work such as prospect actions, gift acknowledgements, and cultivation mailings
  • Working as a fundraising partner, provide high-level advice to partner organizations. Provide the support necessary – materials, training, statistics and language – for local partners to raise program funds
  • Integrate feedback from partners and industry leaders to continuously improve PJ Library’s program and outreach services
  • Work with partners to create plans that strengthen PJ Library within each partner organization and community
  • Bring the HGF trustees and directors to meetings or conversations as needed
  • Oversee maintenance of PJ Library’s brand on local and regional level, together with HGF staff. Ensure partners maintain a strong brand presence, grow their subscription numbers, and serve as a liaison to the national marketing team
 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 7 years of direct fundraising experience with individuals and organizations
  • Record of accomplishment of securing gifts at the $100,000+ level, or relevant business development experience
  • Existing relationships with West Coast Jewish communal and philanthropic organizations
  • Superior communication skills—interpersonal, written and presentations
  • Ability to develop and implement creatve, effective cultivation and solicitation strategies and generate enthusiasm for them among team members
  • Commitment to goal attainment, high degree of initiative, and ability to engage high-level donors
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and/or implementation of cultivation events
  • Demonstrated ability to work with great autonomy and accountability and to be a team player
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time
