Chief Advancement Officer

The Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) seeks a senior fundraising expert to fill the newly created position of Chief Advancement Officer.

Expansive growth nationally and internationally of the Foundation’s flagship program, PJ Library, as well as increasing opportunities to provide fundraising leadership and resources across HGF have created the need for this position. The Chief Advancement Officer will serve as the senior fundraising expert across the Foundation, managing the PJ Library fundraising team and partnering with Directors of various programs to guide and support global fundraising strategy.

The Chief Advancement Officer will be responsible for directly and indirectly raising more than $15 million every year – with a five-year goal of increasing revenues by 50% – and ensuring the advancement team is appropriately resourced to support the Foundation’s needs. The advancement team is comprised of dynamic, dedicated and talented frontline fundraising and development operations staff ready to take fundraising for the Foundation on behalf of PJ Library and other initiatives to the next level. The Harold Grinspoon Foundation is seeking a creative, highly motivated senior fundraising professional who can bring PJ Library forward into a new, exciting phase of fundraising growth.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Determine annual fundraising priorities, revenue targets and budgets, in close partnership with Foundation leadership
  • Design and implement corresponding international, national, and community fundraising plans for PJ Library that produce short-term results and facilitate long-term sustainability
  • Promote and reinforce fundraising priorities internally and ensure Foundation staff are aligned on goals and expectations
  • Serve as the senior fundraising expert at the Foundation, advising various program directors on fundraising trends and best practices and ensuring the advancement department is poised to provide practical resources across Foundation programs
  • Serve as an additional representative for the Foundation, effectively and meaningfully communicating program value and mission with various constituencies
  • Expand and support PJ Library’s multiple fundraising models, including the community partnership model, ensuring their revenue targets are appropriately supported by the Foundation’s advancement department
  • Forecast expected revenues from fundraising activities throughout fiscal year and regularly report fundraising progress to the President and Board of Trustees
  • Establish meaningful relationships with and hold a portfolio of top donors to PJ Library

Management Responsibilities

  • Manage and coach a growing advancement team charged with fundraising for PJ Library, including advancement operations, donor relations, and frontline fundraisers
  • Ensure the advancement team is appropriately resourced to support fundraising across the Foundation, particularly as it relates to stewardship and the management of donor information
  • Set advancement staff goals, regularly monitor progress and share results with senior leadership to ensure the advancement team is on track to meet and exceed organizational needs
  • Execute thoughtful systems and processes to measure and ensure progress towards fundraising goals

Fundraising Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 50-75 top donors and prospects to PJ Library
  • Serve as a lead fundraiser for PJ Library, collaborating with fundraising staff to cultivate, solicit and steward major community and national prospects
  • Establish meaningful relationships with major donors, foundations, and community partners

Skills and/or Experience Required

  • 10-15 years of senior fundraising and leadership experience; preferably in multi-faceted organizations with an annual operating budget at or exceeding $15 million
  • Significant experience in cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding six- and seven-figure gifts
  • Demonstrated success in building and managing a highly skilled staff team towards executing a fundraising strategy and achieving goals while overseeing several time-sensitive and concurrent projects
  • Collaborative, highly motivated and creative thinker who takes pride in their work and goes above and beyond to ensure planned results
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build meaningful relationships with various constituencies
  • Motivated by the mission of PJ Library and the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and an ability to translate that passion into a compelling ask
  • Excellent attention to detail; time management and organizational skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
